Okay, Kennington is not Shoreditch! But for locals there is Oaka, a buzzy, upfront Thai and Pan-Asian bar and restaurant. You can enjoy the food, or sip a cocktail, or chill with your friends. The idea is that it’s a meeting place to enjoy anytime. “We particularly like our customers bringing their friends on birthdays and special occasions. But come any day, whatever the occasion”, says Patcharee, the joint owner with her partner Paul Hook, the owners of Oaka Group, who own the iconic Oakham Brewery in Peterborough with its award-winning beers and associated Asian-style restaurants. Patcharee has established Asian restaurants at Oaka’s various pub outlets, and the result is what she says is a “full-on, whole-night out, one-stop experience for the clientele”. Book it and bring your friends.
When you arrive, perhaps order a refreshing Citra ale, made with a unique American hop, or order a wine from a long list of specially chosen fine wines. Then order the food. Try the excellent Heavenly Beef and don’t miss the Pad Cha Seafood.  My guest had the Pad Ga Prao and said it was one of the best dishes she had experienced for a very long time. Don’t confuse Pan-Asian with Fusion. The dishes are authentic regional cuisine from various countries, carefully chosen for variety of taste.
Patcharee’s concept for the food at Oaka reflects her life. She grew up on the southern border of Thailand and Malaysia and her mother’s cooking incorporated Malaysian dishes. Then the family moved to Northern Thailand and her mother become influenced by the dishes of Laos.
“Our home was a centre of hospitality with people coming and going, always food on the table and people mixing. I want Oaka to be a bit like the house I grew up in.”
Well, I liked the attack on my tastebuds, and I also enjoyed the hospitable atmosphere of Oaka. A great place to bring friends any time.
